Monemvasia for Lovers

Suggestions for all couples looking for a romantic few days in the medieval fortress.

1st Day

First take a walk through the narrow lanes of the fortress before having dinner at one of the picturesque tavernas. Finish the evening with a drink in one of the bars within the town walls.

2nd Day

No need to do absolutely anything! Spend the morning lying in for complete relaxation! If you want to stretch your legs a little later, climb up to the Upper Town or head for one of the nearby beaches. As evening falls, take a leisurely walk over the causeway to Gefyra for some fresh fish and a traditional sweet.

3rd Day

Begin your exploration of the area with an excursion to the north along the rugged coastline with its wooded cliffs and striking landscape, heading for Kyparissi. Your route takes you through Gerakas, with its unusual fjord. Stop for a swim at Drymiskos beach where you may be the only visitors. Drymiskos is accessible only foot or four-wheel drive. The entire route has several places of interest (see Zarakas route).

4th Day

Today’s excursion takes you south to an area rich in natural and historic sights, beautiful beaches and hiking trails.  After a swim at Pouda, or opposite on the island of Elafonisos, you must not miss a visit to the Kastania Cave. Finish your day with a meal at one of Neapoli’s fish restaurants. (Additional places of interest are suggested in the routes Vatika Νο.1, Vatika No. 2 and Vatika Νο.3).

5th Day

Before leaving Monemvasia, don’t forget to buy yourselves a present from among the many excellent products available in the town’s traditional stores, such as wine, organic olives and olive oil, sweets and many other high quality wares. Even better, visit the producers themselves – they are to be found not far from the fortress town.

Portelo beach

ΕΣΠΑ Περιφέρεια Πελοποννήσου

A small opening tucked away on the south side of the walls right at the bottom of the fortress leads to the pretty little cove of Portelo, that once served as the fortress’s supply port. It was also the only place Monemvasiots could go swimming.
Recently restored, Portelo provides the unique experience of swimming right under the imposing fortress city of Monemvasia.
Suitable for those staying in Monemvasia fortress and who do not want to leave the historic fortress itself in order to swim.
Provides protection from northerly winds.
